Earth Day Art Contest flyer1
CHAMPAIGN – The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to school closures in Illinois, potentially leaving parents responsible for home-schooling their children for the remainder of March. While families are making arrangements, State Senator Scott Bennett is launching an educational art contest to help keep students occupied.

As of Friday, Governor JB Pritzker ordered all K-12 schools — both public and private — be closed from March 17 to March 30 to further safeguard communities from the spread of the virus.

Schools are working around the clock to implement various plans to help meet children’s academic needs from home. During this time, children will be left with limited options to get out of the house, which is why Senator Bennett (D-Champaign) announced an educational art contest Tuesday.

“With travel plans cancelled, school closures, and many people working remotely, parents have a daunting task ahead of them this month,” Bennett said. “I know these closures are going to be an inconvenience, so it will be important for kids to productively fill their downtime at home. This art contest will serve as another educational opportunity.”

Bennett’s art competition is open to all students in Champaign and Vermilion counties and is divided into three categories: elementary, middle school and high school. The contest is centered on Earth Day 2020, with a focus in the theme of climate action.

All entries must include students name, grade and school. Students can mail their artwork to 45 E. University, Suite 206, Champaign, IL 61820 or 201 N. Vermilion St., Suite 323, Danville, IL 61832. The deadline to submit an entry is April 8.

After entries have been received, they will be narrowed down to the top three pieces in each category. Bennett will then host a poll on his official Facebook account, where students and residents will be able to choose the winners to be displayed in the senator’s office. The poll will close April 15 at 5 p.m. and the winners will be announced.

For questions related to the art contest or for information on learning resources during school closures, Bennett encourages residents to call his office at 217-355-5252 or visit SenatorBennett.com.
