Bennett partners with AT&T to award grant to technology organizationCHAMPAIGN - State Senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) is excited to partner with AT&T to award $45,000 to the ICANEXSEL Program.

As the chairman of the General Assembly’s Technology Caucus, Bennett recognizes the importance technology has in growing our economy and making sure Illinois’ workforce is meeting the needs of local employers.

“As I continue to talk to local businesses, the common narrative is the need for graduates trained to meet their technology demands,” Bennett said. “ICANEXSEL is an example of a program that is training our youth innovative and technology-savvy skills to be part of our global economy.”

ICANEXSEL is a partnership of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Chicago Pre-College Science and Engineering, a non-profit organization.

As part of the program, students and faculty from Urbana-Champaign teach workshops in math and engineering for public middle school students in Chicago. Teachers from Chicago Public Schools are also trained in the instructional and collaborative techniques that are used in the student workshops.

About 50 students took part in a pilot version of the program in 2015, and the program will expand this year.

“It’s important that we form these private and public partnerships to meet the needs of our economy,” Bennett said. “A well-trained workforce is a key ingredient to a booming business climate.”

Bennett has continued to work to address workforce shortages. His hope is that our communities continue to foster and develop relationships to educate and train our students.
